The Breathe Series · Aromatherapy Deep Dive All About Eucalyptus Oil
One word. Two very different essential oils. Here's the story behind our Breathe collection.
"Eucalyptus isn't one oil — it's a whole family. The species shapes the experience. At Proper Xchange, we match the species to the intention." — Genni · Assistant Aromatherapist · Proper Xchange
In Essence The Short Version
There are around 700 eucalyptus species worldwide — approximately 500 of them produce an essential oil. The species matters because it determines the oil's aromatic character, chemical makeup, and best use. At Proper Xchange, we chose two eucalyptus species for our Breathe collection — one for your everyday skin-contact formats, one for our shower steamers — because the format determines the experience, and the species shapes the aroma.

Everyday Breathe Formats Eucalyptus Radiata Eucalyptus radiata · 1,8-Cineole 65–75% Rounded, fresh, and slightly sweet. We chose radiata as a gentler oil for children, seniors, and those with sensitive skin. → Breath Roll-On → Breathe Body Oil → Breathe Room, Linen & Body Spray
| Shower Ritual Eucalyptus Globulus Eucalyptus globulus 80/85 · 1,8-Cineole >80% Bold, pungent, and unmistakably spa. Perfect for shower steamers where steam heat activates the aroma at full intensity. → Breathe Luxury Shower Steamers "Open your airways with pure eucalyptus & menthol vapors"

The Science Radiata vs. Globulus
Both species are high in 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) — the compound responsible for that clear, camphoraceous eucalyptus sensation. Here's the difference:
65–75% 1,8-Cineole · Radiata Eucalyptus radiata Slightly lower cineole = softer, rounder aroma. Ideal for everyday skin-contact and room formats. Origin: Australia / South Africa.
| >80% 1,8-Cineole · Globulus 80/85 Eucalyptus globulus Cineole concentrated by rectification = bold, pungent, intense. Perfect when steam heat activates the aroma. Origin: China.
Tisserand Institute notes that radiata is sometimes called "gentler," but "the difference in terms of safety is almost negligible." Both are wonderful for respiratory support. The real difference? Aromatic character and experience design.
